Governor Josh Stein visited the town of Old Fort yesterday to update residents on new funding committed by the North Carolina Division of Water Infrastructure to improve the town’s water system.

The N.C. Division of Water Infrastructure provides financial support for projects that enhance water quality. As part of the latest initiative, the town has been allotted $10 million for its drinking water system and $5 million for its sewer system. These funds will be used to upgrade Old Fort’s entire water system, which was damaged during Hurricane Helene.

Sheriff Ricky T. Buchanan attended the event and spoke with Governor Stein, expressing gratitude for his efforts on behalf of McDowell County residents.

“It was an honor to speak with Gov. Stein yesterday,” Sheriff Buchanan said. “In addition to his work, we want to also thank him for the continuing support he provides to law enforcement and emergency services.”

The funding represents a significant step forward in restoring and improving Old Fort’s infrastructure, ensuring safer and more reliable water and sewer services for the community.
