After weeks of dry conditions and severe drought across Western North Carolina, much-needed rainfall finally arrived. While the rain brought relief to the region, it also created a few challenges of its own.

Just as residents and visitors were celebrating the reopening of Chimney Rock and Lake Lure following extensive cleanup efforts after Hurricane Helene, another setback occurred. Heavy rainfall triggered a 30-by-60-foot landslide along the main road leading into Chimney Rock State Park, prompting officials to announce a temporary closure from June 1 through June 5 for repairs.

Fortunately, the closure didn't last long.

Thanks to the hard work and quick response of the North Carolina Department of Transportation (NCDOT), repairs were completed ahead of schedule, and the park officially reopened on June 3. Their rapid efforts helped restore access to one of the region’s most beloved destinations in just a matter of days.

The Memorial Day weekend rains also caused water levels to rise significantly throughout the area. According to Chris Melton of the Lake Lure Fire Department, lake levels reached their highest point since Hurricane Helene. Despite the elevated water levels, the landslide was the only major issue reported.

Looking ahead, park officials are inviting visitors to celebrate National Trails Day this Saturday from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., offering another opportunity to enjoy the beauty of the area.

The good news is that Chimney Rock is open, Lake Lure is open, local restaurants are welcoming guests, and the entire community is ready to welcome visitors back.

So if you've been thinking about a mountain getaway, now is a great time to experience all that Lake Lure and Chimney Rock have to offer.
