Investigators say stolen NASCAR memorabilia helped crack months-long case; additional suspects remain under investigation.

An Iredell County man has been charged in connection with the burglary of the family home of former NASCAR driver Greg Biffle, months after guns, cash, coins and NASCAR memorabilia were reported stolen.

Iredell County Sheriff Darren Campbell announced Tuesday that detectives charged Terrell Williams, 44, with burglary following a months-long investigation. Williams is being held without bond in Cobb County, Georgia, while North Carolina authorities work to have him returned to face felony warrants.

The investigation began Jan. 8, when deputies responded to Biffle’s residence after the family reported that multiple firearms, cash, gold and silver coins and NASCAR memorabilia had been stolen.

“Numerous items were stolen including multiple firearms, NASCAR memorabilia, gold and silver coins and cash,” Campbell said.

Investigators obtained surveillance video showing a person at the property. However, Campbell said low-light conditions and infrared illumination initially prevented detectives from positively identifying the individual.

Authorities said detectives eventually built the case through a combination of search warrants, cellphone data, Flock camera information and other technology.

Campbell said investigators believe the suspect monitored public information and social media to determine when residents were away from their homes.

“He used headlines, social media posts and different things to find out when people were or were not home,” Campbell said.

NASCAR memorabilia provides breakthrough

A significant break came July 29, when authorities in Cobb County, Georgia, contacted the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office as part of a separate burglary investigation.

Investigators recovered property believed to belong to the Biffle family, including a piece of NASCAR memorabilia described as a ring bearing initials.

Detectives searched for information about the ring online and found an earlier public release that helped connect the item to the Biffle burglary.

A radio-frequency detector also was recovered. Investigators believe the device may have been used while navigating the Biffle residence.

Authorities said electronic evidence and other investigative information placed Williams at the property. Investigators have not definitively identified Williams as the person seen in the original surveillance footage.

The sheriff’s office said the investigation remains active and additional suspects have not been ruled out.

Investigators say homes were targeted

According to investigators, Williams did not appear to have a personal connection to the Biffle family.

Instead, authorities allege he targeted high-profile residences and used publicly available information to determine when homeowners were away.

Investigators also said Williams has used six or seven aliases, although he primarily operated under one name.

Authorities said evidence indicated that an amount of cash similar to what was stolen from the Biffle home was later used to purchase a vehicle. An alias was allegedly used in connection with that purchase.

Campbell urged residents to be careful about posting information online that could reveal when their homes are unoccupied.

Investigation continues

Williams remains in custody in Cobb County, Georgia. Iredell County authorities are seeking his return to North Carolina to face felony warrants related to the Biffle burglary. He also faces felony warrants in Mecklenburg County, authorities said.

The sheriff’s office emphasized that the arrest does not mark the end of the investigation.

Detectives are continuing to investigate whether other people participated in the burglary, and additional charges remain possible.

“We are still investigating,” Campbell said, adding that detectives intend to “leave no stone unturned.”

A separate white-collar fraud investigation connected to the broader case also remains active, with local, state and federal agencies working with the Iredell County Sheriff’s Office.

The sheriff’s office said NASCAR assisted investigators during the investigation.

Lt. Donald Clodfelter said investigators spoke with the Biffle family Monday night and described the arrest as a significant development that provided some relief following the lengthy investigation. Authorities said the family has cooperated throughout the case.

The burglary investigation comes after the December plane crash that killed Biffle, his wife, their two children and three others. WCAB sister station WAME in Statesville carried Tuesday’s sheriff’s press conference live on air and Facebook. WAME was also the first station to report the fatal crash.

As the investigation continues, authorities say they are still working to recover stolen property and determine whether additional people were involved.
