The U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission will conduct a scheduled cybersecurity inspection at the McGuire Nuclear Station beginning June 22, 2026, according to a letter obtained by WCAB News, which was sent to Duke Energy officials this week.
The inspection will review cybersecurity protections for digital systems tied to safety, security, and emergency preparedness at the plant’s Units 1 and 2. Federal regulations require nuclear facilities to maintain safeguards against cyber threats targeting critical infrastructure.
The review will follow the NRC’s standard inspection procedures and includes both off-site document analysis and an on-site visit scheduled for June 22–26.
Duke Energy has been asked to provide initial documentation by April 24, including lists of critical systems, network diagrams, and cybersecurity program details. Additional materials will be requested in May, with final records due ahead of the on-site inspection.
Inspectors will evaluate areas such as network defenses, incident response protocols, access controls, and prior cybersecurity issues.
The NRC said the inspection is part of its routine oversight program and does not indicate a specific safety concern. Findings will be made publicly available through the agency’s records system.
