A Rutherfordton man has been sentenced to 18.75 years in prison and ordered to pay $1 million after pleading guilty to multiple felony charges, including trafficking fentanyl and criminal gang activity, authorities said.

Roberto Luis Alvarez, 25, of 190 Tryon Road, entered his guilty plea Thursday in Rutherford County Superior Court, the Forest City Police Department announced in a statement via Nixle. The charges stemmed from the ongoing investigation into the local criminal group known as the 448 gang.

“This conviction represents a major step forward and the first significant break in dismantling this criminal gang organization operating within Rutherford County,” the department said. “Cases like this take sustained effort, strong partnerships, and a shared commitment to public safety.”

The department expressed gratitude to the Tri-City Violent Crimes Task Force and the Rutherford County District Attorney’s Office for their cooperation during the investigation.

According to a public records review from the North Carolina eCourts system, Alvarez has additional cases pending in the Rutherford County District and Superior Courts. The charges in those cases range from felony offenses to probation violations, highlighting his ongoing legal entanglements.

Alvarez’s criminal history also includes prior convictions for driving-related offenses, DWI, criminal contempt, and carrying a concealed weapon. Authorities say the recent conviction marks a significant milestone in efforts to reduce organized criminal activity linked to the 448 gang in the region.
