The McDowell County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new scam involving an individual falsely claiming to be a deputy. Officials say these scams often begin in one county before spreading to neighboring areas.

According to reports, someone identifying themselves as “Deputy Marcus Phillips” has been calling McDowell County residents, claiming they missed a court appearance and must resolve the issue immediately. Authorities confirm that no deputy by that name works for the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office.

This is a law enforcement impersonation scam, and residents are urged not to fall for it. Common warning signs include:

  • Demands for immediate payment

  • Requests for payment via gift cards, cash apps, or wire transfers

  • Threats of arrest over the phone

  • Attempts to create panic or urgency

The Sheriff’s Office reminds the public that real deputies will never request money or threaten arrest over the phone. Anyone receiving such a call should hang up immediately and contact the McDowell County Sheriff’s Office directly to verify any claims.
