The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a new scam aimed at taking advantage of families and friends of recently incarcerated individuals.
According to investigators, scammers have been monitoring recent arrests and then contacting relatives or acquaintances of those in custody. The callers claim to be deputies or supervisors with the Sheriff’s Office and request payments—often through online or mobile payment platforms—to secure the release of the arrested person.
Officials emphasize that this is a scam. The Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office does not request or accept any type of payment over the phone or through online payment apps.
Residents are urged not to send money or share personal information with anyone claiming to represent the Sheriff’s Office in this manner. Anyone who receives a suspicious call is advised to hang up immediately and report the incident to the Rutherford County Sheriff’s Office.
Investigators are actively looking into the matter and encourage the public to stay alert and share this information to help prevent others from becoming victims of the scam.
